The first time reel to reel recording was used in the 1930s. Reel to Reel as a term was used to distinguish the media form types such as cartridges or cassettes that were introduced in the 1960s.

In the early days of reel to reel tape, it was used to store data from large mainframe computers. During the 80, it was widely to for high quality digital audio recording. In fact, even today some artists prefer the sound of reel to reel recording because it delivers a more naturally warm sound. Many artists will initial recorded using digital recording and the use that recording to record to a reel to reel tap to get that sound effect.

Editing with Reel to reel gets a little tricky. You actually have to splice the tape and then join it back together at the correct spot. Not as simple as digital editing which is why many of the artist will recording digitally first so they can edit easier and then put the final track to tape.
